Managers Certificate (MC)


This certificate provides the knowledge and skills necessary to operate successfully as a GSU manager. Ideal candidates are current managers wishing to improve their skillset, newly promoted managers, or supervisors preparing to compete for a managerial position.


Program Content

Competencies for this certificate were identified through a review of GSU’s strategic plan, discussions with aspirational universities, the Staff Development and Advancement Committee, online research, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents Leadership Competency model, and the 2011 GSU Staff Survey. The certificate program consists of eight courses (six core courses and two electives). Courses are delivered via both classroom (instructor-led training – ILT) and online (Skillport). Coursework must be completed within a two year window.


Some of the courses require a registration fee. Depending on your course selection, you can expect to invest between $350 and $500.

Core Courses (must complete all)

Coaching is fast becoming a competency that leaders and managers must have. This class will cover a 5-step basic model in Coaching. We will address: Why Coaching, How to Create Trust, How to Coach, and Competencies and Skills like listening, questioning and feedback that make a good coach. We will address two styles of coaching and the differences in using them in Performance and Career Coaching. The course will have opportunities for you to practice…so bring examples with you that you would like to work on. Classroom/$150
“What Did You Say?“ This course is designed to improve interpersonal communications with all people. Utilizing the DiSC Profile as a foundation for discussion, participants will have an opportunity to identify their dominant personality style, and the way it translates into their communication style. Additionally, this course provides participants with a reality-based definition of good communication. Classroom/$150
Raise your game! Critical Thinking facilitates breaking down arguments into their constituent parts and clarifying what evidence lends support to what conclusion. This is the first step towards one’s critical engagement with ideas. Critical Thinking also helps you clearly articulate arguments of your own. The ability to present a coherent and persuasive case for a position is a major asset to anyone. Critical Thinking enables you to think independently, make better decisions, solve problems systematically, and think more creatively. With Critical Thinking in your toolkit, you will be able to detect inconsistencies and common mistakes in reason, recognize your own assumptions and biases, identify the importance and relevance of various ideas, and reach well-reasoned conclusions and solutions. Upon completion of this course, you will understand: the wide range of behaviors that may constitute discrimination and harassment; that free speech rights don’t apply in the workplace; what constitutes a tangible employment action; and that everyone has a right to work in an environment free from discrimination and harassment. Group dynamics impact productivity and employee satisfaction, so it's important for managers to cultivate positive relationships among coworkers. This course covers motivating your team, managing team performance, establishing your identity and authority within a group, addressing conflict, and making work fun. Full of practical tips and useful strategies, this course is a great reference for first-time managers and for more experienced managers who may need to address a specific issue with their team. This course details what delegation is, and the benefits it offers managers, employees, and the organization. These include saving time and money, developing employees' skills and capabilities, and encouraging accountability. The course also outlines some of the qualities that successful delegators possess, such as trust in their employees and a willingness to take risks. Finally, it covers the different styles of delegation, including when it's most appropriate to use each one. (online)
This course outlines the four styles of decision making—autocratic, participatory, democratic, and consensual—and reveals which styles are best suited for specific situations. Recognizing that ambiguity is a part of any decision-making process, the instructor covers the four types of ambiguity you'll face so that you can recognize what you don't know in order to reduce risk and plan for contingencies. He also presents techniques for involving stakeholders in the decision-making process and explains how to use a RACI (responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed) matrix. This 3-hour interactive workshop is a follow-up course to Managing Yourself in a Diverse Workplace. This workshop focuses on those who manage others. It explores such cultural characteristics as those above the surface as well as those that are hidden or below. It addresses perceptions that often misinform the reality that sometimes leads to biases and prejudice. Further, this workshop facilitates participants’ clarification of those diversity competencies needed to manage others more effectively in a diverse and global workplace. This session details strategies to promote positive employee relations and Georgia State's progressive disciplinary process. It identifies ways to motivate employees. It provides modeling and practice in how to hold discussions with staff members about unacceptable performance when coaching and feedback have failed to correct performance. The group will also discuss procedures for documentation and handling emotions under pressure. Classroom/No Registration Fee
This interactive program will teach you the essentials of the leadership process and help you earn respect as a trusted leader. It shows you how to master the five roles of a leader: role model, visionary, motivator, coach and change agent. It builds your skills in setting the example, the agenda, the direction, and the expectations for others to follow. It deepens your skills in engaging, influencing, and inspiring others to follow your lead and do their best. It strengthens your ability to delegate, coach, and hold others accountable for improved performance. It will help you build a unified team of committed high-performing colleagues. Classroom/$150
This course introduces a variety of tools and techniques to use at the three most important steps of the decision-making process: generating, evaluating, and choosing between alternative courses of action. Nominal group technique (NGT) is used to brainstorm and prioritize options as a team. Return on Investment (ROI) measures distill the costs and benefits of each alternative into a monetary value, thus enabling you to easily compare your options on financial terms. Three other decision-making tools – the devil's advocate technique, Plus/Minus/Interesting (PMI) analysis, and the ease-and-effect matrix – provide alternate methodologies for challenging and evaluating alternatives before making a decision. Equipping yourself with these tools will ensure you have an edge when you're facing an important decision.
